  1. Mrs. Ritter and Sequoyah faculty and staff, thank you so much for having us in your school last week, what a wonderful school you all have! Leaving about option board and more on how reading groups work was very educational for me. I think option board would be an excellent addition for a classroom to promote student accountability and responsibility. I hope to be in your school one day again, thanks again for making us feel so welcome and showing us around!

  2. Thank you so much to all of the teachers who worked with us and allowed us into your classrooms. I loved seeing how Mrs. Ritter used the option board to give her children more responsibility for their own work. It was a great experience at Sequoyah and the teachers were very encouraging. Thank you again!

  3. Thank you Mrs. McShane for allowing my class to come and observe your second grade team. Thank you Mrs. Ritter for hosting our class. In Mrs. Ritter’s classroom I enjoyed learning more about the option board in place of centers. The flexibility of the grouping allowed the students to work on several skills during that time period. I also gained valuable knowledge in learning more about reading groups. Mrs. Ritter was helpful in guiding us through the process. This gave me insight on how to work with reading groups. Thank you again for providing a beneficial learning experience.

  4. Thank you so much to Mrs. Ritter for allowing all us to come into your classroom and get introduced to Option Board. I thought it was a great idea to allow your students to pick and choose what "center" they would do that day and work at their own pace. It was a great way for older students to approach learning. Also, thank you to Mrs. Stobaugh for allowing us to sit in on your word study lesson as well. She approached word categories in a new way with rules to follow and the idea of also having an "oddball". Overall, it was a great experience and I learned new ways to approach learning in new ways. Sequoyah is a great school!

  5. Thank you Sequoyah Elementary for allowing our ECED class into your school! I really enjoyed the introduction to option board by Mrs. Ritter. The idea of allowing students which center they choose to work in is very appealing. It was interesting to see each student drag their name to the desired section in which they wanted to work in that particular day. Mrs. Stobaugh was inviting by letting us sit in on her word study lesson. Her technique of teaching students to stretch words out was very beneficial. The whole experience is very much appreciated!

  6. Sequoyah was a wonderful school visit experience for me, and if I can speak for my peers, for all of us. We appreciate Mrs. Ritter and all the other teachers that opened their classrooms to us. It's always so nice to see how each teacher utilizes their skills in different ways to cater to their classrooms. I saw a lot of diversity in the students and their teachers treated them all with equity. I will definitely consider putting into use the option board, I think that idea will allow the students to keep themselves accountable while giving them the power of choice. Thank you so much for your time, we understand how important that is for you all and we are very grateful for having shared it with us.

  7. Thank you to everyone at Sequoyah who allowed our language and literacy class to come in and observe all of your wonderful classes. A special thanks to Mrs. Ritter for allowing all of us to come into your classroom. I have become a huge fan of the option board now! I think that is such a great idea and it is so different from what other teachers I’ve seen use. I would also like to thank Mrs. Stobaugh for greeting and welcoming my group into her classroom. She did a great demonstration of a word study lesson. As a group we got to watch her and her students interact while sorting words into word categories. Being able to work one-on-one with the students after the lesson was great also. It’s fun to see how the students learn while also getting a feel of their personality. Thank you all again for providing us with such a great experience. It was such a beneficial trip and I learned so many great things through this experience.

  8. Thank you so much to Sequoyah Elementary School and especially Mrs. Ritter's class for allowing us to visit your school. I really enjoyed seeing the option board it action. I haven't seen the option board in my Practicum placements thus far so it was really nice to see something new. I think that it is very important for children to be in charge of their own learning and I felt that the option board is an easy and fun way to make that happen. Mrs. Ritter also showed us how she orchestrates a reading group. I feel that this was great practice and something that can be really useful for us in Internship next semester. Once again, thank you so much to Mrs. Ritter and the faculty/staff for allowing our class to come into your school!

  9. Thank you Sequoyah and Mrs. Ritter for letting us visit your school and class. I really enjoyed getting to see how Mrs. Ritter ran her classroom. I had never seen Option Board and loved how the students were in charge of their own learning. Mrs. Ritter also showed a group of us how she runs her guided reading groups. It was beneficial to see how she worked with the students and asked them questions. Mrs. Ritter provided information on how to run reading groups and how to always the leave students with a goal to work towards. It really put some ideas we have been learning into perspective. Seeing the students participate in a word study activity and then answering questions was a learning experience. I took notes on what Mrs. Ritter said such as to have the students flag their thinking while reading. I also appreciate Mrs. Ritter talking to my group about the interview process, since we will be applying for jobs very soon. It was nice to have some insight into how the interview process works. Overall, it was a wonderful learning experience!

Thank you again for allowing us into your school!

  10. Thank you Mrs. Ritter for allowing our ECED class to observe in your classroom! I think the Option Board is a great way to hold students accountable for their work during center times. While observing in the classroom, all students were on task and learning. When they finished one assignment, they moved to the next option. We were also able to observe a guided reading group. This was beneficial to me because I was able to gain a better understanding of how to question students in a small group setting. Overall, I learned some valuable knowledge that I will be able to use in my future classroom. Again, thank you so much for this opportunity!

  11. Thank you so much Sequoyah and second grade team for letting us observe in your classrooms!I loved seeing the option board that Mrs. Ritter had in her room. I have never seen that in other classrooms so it was really cool to see! I liked that the students got a choice in what they were going to do. The group I was with got to go to Mrs. Goss' room where we observed literacy time. We got to watch a whole group time and then Mrs. Goss brought students to the table for literacy groups. During the group time the other students worked independently. It was amazing to me how quiet and well behaved the students were while working on the individual work. Mrs. Goss explained to us that they did different things with word study each day. They had a schedule listed on the wall. For example, the first day, they cut, initial, sort, and write their words and the second day they draw and label them. They continue to do different activities with the words each day. I liked that Mrs. Goss had a schedule of different activities posted. Again, thank you so much for this opportunity! Sequoyah does seem like a happy place to learn!

  12. I loved the use of the smart board in the first classroom we started in. The teacher allowed the children to choose what activity they wanted to do. She said she would email us the tool and allow us to use it in the classroom. My group then went to Mrs. Goss’ classroom where we got to watch her literacy time. The students moved to the carpet and worked on their word set for the weeks and then went back to their seats. Mrs. Goss took one group of children and practiced their words with them. While she was working with this group, her other students were completely silent. It was incredible how silent and respectful the other children were. Mrs. Goss explained to us that it was a bumpy process, but they eventually got to where they were at in the semester now. It was real encouraging to talk to Mrs. Goss and her advice about being in the classroom. That we can expect it to start off muddy, but with time it will clear up. This was my first time in Sequoyah Elementary and I loved it. It was a nice school and I have heard amazing things from it. All the teachers that we had the chance to talk to were very encouraging and helpful.

  13. Thank you all at Sequoyah! When we first entered the school, the receptionists greeted us with such happy and helpful faces. It was such a warm welcome, and helped made the transition into the school with ease. A special thank you to Mrs. Ritter and Mrs. Stobaugh, who allow us into their classrooms. Mrs. Ritter’s kiddos were so well behaved and helpful. The students talked us through what the option board was and how they completed the task. In Mrs. Stobaugh’s classroom, she was teaching cvc and other blends. The way she taught and interacted with her students inspired me on ways to teach my future classroom. Getting the chance to work one-on-one with the class was a great experience. Thank you again Sequoyah Elementary for the amazing opportunity to be immersed into your school.

  14. Thank you Sequoyah and all the teachers for letting us visit your classrooms. I enjoyed observing the teacher and getting to work with the students. I really liked Mrs. Ritter's Option Board concept. It was a completely different way to do the usual centers. I liked how it let the students be in charge of what they do and when they do it. Thanks again Sequoyah Elementary for allowing us into your school and into your classroom.

  15. I am so thankful to have gotten to visit Sequoyah Elementary! Mrs. Goss was such a wonderful example of how a teacher should speak to her students and encourage them. I could tell that her students loved her. I loved getting to observe a word work activity (rhyme time) and a phonics pull out. The word study wall chart was awesome! I will definitely use that chart in my classroom. Thank you so much, Mrs. Goss, for answering our questions and showing us how to teach well. I really enjoyed my visit in your classroom.

  16. I loved going back to Sequoyah and getting to visit with Mrs. Ritter again! She showed us Option Board and how her students used it. The students knew exactly what to do and where to go, and Mrs. Ritter didn't have to say much of anything to get them on task! I loved this option to use for classroom centers because it eliminates having to hand make centers to display and cuts down on clutter in the classroom. We also got to watch how Mrs. Ritter conducts her guided reading groups. I think I will adopt her practice of integrating word study into her groups because the students in the groups are on the same level and will need about the same type of help. She uses the term "flagging" your reading. It is a way to get students thinking deeper about what they are reading, I think I would like to use that in my class too. I enjoyed Mrs. Ritter and her awesome students! I will definitely be adopting some of her ideas to use when I become a teacher! Hopefully I'll get to teach in as an amazing school as Sequoyah!

  17. Thank you so much to the Sequoyah teachers for allowing us to come into their classrooms. I enjoyed watching has Mrs. Goss interacted with their students and how she kept her voice so low that it held the students attention. It was interesting to see how she ran her reading groups and the different activities she had the group do with her. I loved the idea of having the kids write words on the whiteboard and then rewrite them again in all four corners to get extra practice. I also loved seeing how much Mrs. Ritter used technology in her classroom and how well the students worked with it. I have never been into a classroom where students got to choose which centers they wanted to work at, but I love the idea! It gets the students to start thinking independently. Thank you again to both teachers who let me come into your classroom!

  18. Thank you so much to the teachers and principal of Sequoyah Elementary for allowing our class to come into your school and observe. I really liked the idea of having the students choose their own centers because I think that would make it more fun for the students because they would get to choose what they wanted to do. The classrooms that I got to see were very into having children doing independent work and I think that is amazing! I feel like the students in this school are learning so much because they have more choice than most. This was an amazing experience and I loved having this opportunity! Thank you again to the teachers and principal for this visit!

  19. Thank you so much Sequoyah for allowing us to visit your classrooms. Watching the students participate in the option board activity was very helpful! This is an interesting option to think about including in my future classroom. I love how student centered this activity was! Thank you again!

  20. Thank you all so much for taking time to let us come into your classrooms and show us different things to help us in our future classrooms. Option board was absolutely wonderful and I definitely think that would be a great alternative for centers for older grades. I like that it makes them responsible for what they need to get done but also allows them to choose what they want to do each day. Then in the second room I went into we were able to see how the students do word study and what they do in reading groups. I can't remember the teachers name but it was awesome to see how she did things in her room because she said that it was her first year teaching, so that made it not seems as scary.
